A little History

Welcome to The Hewas Inn - A Pub Steeped in History

Nestled in the heart of Sticker, The Hewas Inn is more than just a place to eat and drink -it’s a part of Cornwall’s rich history. Our name, “Hewas”, is deeply rooted in the Cornish language, meaning “summer farm” or “rough pasture” a nod to the land’s historical use as seasonal farmland.

The surrounding area has a fascinating past, stretching back to at least the 13th century, when farmland around Sticker was owned by the Huish family. The Huish family controlled the local mill, and maintaining the leats—channels that carried water to power the mill—was essential for surrounding farms. Over time, it is believed that the name Huish evolved into Hewas, giving rise to Hewas Water, the name still used today.

But the history doesn’t stop there. Our pub was once known as The Great Hewas Inn, named after the Great Hewas Mine, a prominent tin mine that operated in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Between 1818 and 1822, this mine produced an incredible 100 tons of black tin per month, playing a crucial role in Cornwall’s renowned mining heritage.

Today, The Hewas Inn continues to be a place for gathering, good food, and great company. Whether you’re here for a hearty meal, a refreshing pint, or just to soak in the atmosphere of a pub rich with history, we invite you to make your own memories in a place that has stood the test of time.
